1989 BMW 525 for a new driver?

by admin on November 15, 2009

My dad found a BMW for sale behind a garage and bought it as my first car for only $500, the guy couldn’t open the car to get in or use it so he didn’t want it (my dad was able to open it at home though). It works and the interior and exterior is in great condition. The only thing is that it has 225,000 miles. How well do these cars run? Safety and reliability?

Thanks

I had a 1986 325is…I bought it when it was 9 years old, it had 125,000 miles on it…I drove and LOVED that car for 10 years til it started to rust and nickle and dime me to death…It had over 300,000 miles on it when I sold it to a teenager..I still saw it around town for about the next 2 years…It never used or leaked oil…The most annoying problems I had with it were electical and sensors, stuff like that..
Let me give you some advice…When you need parts, order used parts…BMW prices are seriously criminal..lol

Oh, and use synthetic oil…You only need to change it twice a year with full synthetic, and the engine will seriously never give out if you do..

Bmw’s are great cars the only problem is the high mileage, these cars cost a lot to maintain even the old ones. They are German so you know its going to be reliable but some times Bmw make the odd lemon, give it regular oil changes (3500m) and don’t thrash the engine and you should be alright. GO TO THIS WEBSITE!! It has reviews on your car. http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/bmw/5_series/1989/

Good Luck

500 bucks is about right for a running well 89 535. Its the real world price. But people can ask for whatever they want for a used car. If the car is in good mechanical condition it should keep you going for awhile. But its a 89 BMW and look forward to lots of electrical problems and a future cracked head. They all crack sooner or later. Keep the trans fluid clean.. When the transmission goes it all over, just to much money for another transmission. Used will only buy you a little time. Feel lucky its not newer as the years went on BMWs just got wore and worse on reliability and suck up even more money.

People who say high mileage is a bad thing are not educated and experienced in the car world. CONDITION is everything. CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION. I have seen 2 identical cars at the same time where one had low miles (and showed it in one way or the other) and the other a couple hundred thousand miles more.(and showed it in one way or the other). Some times the higher mileage car is better in oh so many ways. Then the low mileage car people would have to pay me to take the car. (NEVER say "you couldn’t pay me to take that car". USUALLY the rule is if its looks shiny and clean mechanically its in need of a lot of work. If looks to be a beat up pile its mechanically sound and many many more miles to go. Some people want to spend money on keeping its image up to keep their image up but just don’t want to spend any money on it mechanically. Then they sell it when it is so beat they can’t ignore the problems anymore. Its very rare to see a older car with both looks and mechanical in good condition. Its just how it goes.
