What type of transmission fluid is recommended to use for my 1998 BMW 528i?

The 1998 528I uses Dextron III, BMW does have technical names for it but it is simply Dextron III. It is not synthetic. They started using synthetic in 2000.

The suitable transmission fluid is usually shown on a sticker on the transmission pan itself.

If not, the easiest way is simply to call Bavarian Autosport http://www.bavauto.com

The guys there will be able to look it up for you. You can then buy the fluid from them in most cases at a cheaper price than your neighborhood parts store.

A5S310Z auto transmission with:
black label uses ATF Dexron III
green label uses Esso LT 71141 ("lifetime"oil)
A5S325Z auto transmission uses only lifetime oil.
