how to shift into reverse a BMW 3 series 1985-1990 car? i can see where reverse is, but cant get into it.?

Probs 1 of 2 things. You need to push the stick down when you go for reverse, or there is a a bit on the stick that will lift. Give it a go

try pushing down on the gear shifter and then move it in to reverse

Those shifter knobs were recalled because the ‘85-’90 3 series was not equipped with reverse from factory.Take it to the local dealer where they can replace your shifter knob to one that doesn’t have that misleading R on it.

You need to push the gear lever down, then shift into reverse.

They make it this way so you don’t accidentally shift into Reverse.

Well make sure you have the clutch all the way down and push real hard to the left and up. Put some muscle into it . I drive one and I use two hands to pull it over and up sometimes.

Dear Angela,
your reverse is just next to No.1,press down and just shift to extreme left and up (just next to no1)
I to 5 u just shift without any extra force.
I have 1984 and I dont complain,I can engage reverse very easily.
Others may have problems with their clutch pump,I believe..
U pls try again and see.u shud succeed.

Simple everyone is WRONG! EXCEPT manster but his answer is confuasing.. so far. Open your hand up and WHAM it over like a pimp slaps his Beietch.. you will feel a pop over sensation. Then slide it up in R..
