gear stick is confusing
Reverse on BMWs is to the left of 1st gear. Push hard to the left and you will feel it pop over, then push it forward to get to reverse. There is no lock collar etc, just heavy resistance so you dont accidentally shift to reverse from 2nd etc.

Reverse is marked as R but you may have a lift a collar on the gear stick just under the knob to select it. Gears will show 1,2,3,4,5,Drive, Neutral,Reverse,Park
Manual
You should have R marked on the top of the gearstick, To select reverse you may have to lift a collar just under the gear knob or push the whole gear stick down and then select or lift the whole gear stick and select. The gate is currently stopping you select reverse is to stop accidental selection whilst driving so is only on the reverse.
