1993 BMW 740 i lost reverse automatic?

by admin on December 10, 2009

when i put my car in reverse nothing happens . All the forward gears work fine. the car has 200,000 on it. If I have to change the tranny ,well the car is through. too bad cause its black on black all tinted , but tranny replacement is 3500 . Could it be throttle body fluids changed

One thing you can check out is this.
When you put it in reverse does the "R" pop up on your dash? If it does not you have a bad shift selector unit. This unit is inside the car wrapped around the shifter. If that part is faulty for the (R) position. Also unplug the shift program switch and try reverse. It to can cause problems. Don’t worry the trans will not blowup if you unplug it and try shifting.

That is one common fault. BUT the 740 trans is a weak transmission. They go out often and its a nasty job changing them. The exhaust alone is like 400 lbs..

I would look around for a mechanic that does work on the side at his own place. Im sure you can beat that 3500 price tag. Maybe try to find a used transmission from a salvage yard-from a BMW with low miles that has been wrecked.

maybe it is body fluid, but very likely you need to change your gearbox.
to be sure, switch your car to R, put your foot on the break and try fiddling between R and N. if eventually it starts moving you are fine.
otherwise if you do not want to pay this much, you can always go to a car junkyard and buy a gearbox from there for cheaper than new.
you can find a wrecked ‘93 740 and ask for the guy to take the piece out for you.
have you done one too many reverse braking and handbrake turns???

well. this is a well researched answer. if you lost your reverse, then go find it.

have you ever change transmission fluid? if no,here is your answer why it happened. probably transmission dided, but try to do transmission flush and maybe it will help. i am sorry to hear that, but many BMW lose their reverse, but you lost it at 200k,other lose it befoe 80-100k :-(
