What is a failsafe mode for BMW transmission?

by admin on December 13, 2009

Fail safe or limp in mode means the transmission computer is not receiving one or more of its inputs it needs to control shift points so it will do a second gear lockout . Which means it will take off in second gear and not allow the transmission to shift any higher. You can usually go about 45mph just enough to limp it in to the repair shop to have checked.

It is a protection mode built into the ECM or on possibly a TCM, samething in theory just one has engine logic and the other has transmission logic. A failsafe mode means there is something wrong that needs to be looked into and ther transmission will de-rate its self, to prevent further failur. Sort of like a human body during shock or something.
