BMW E39 528i steptronic?

by admin on December 3, 2009

1. Does anyone know why BMW changed the final drive ratio from 4.10 to 3.46 from 9/99?
2. If I change mine (7/2000) from 3.46 to 4.10, what is the downside?
3. I use Dinan s/w and so the RPM limit is raised, please keep this in mind, in case it has a bearing on your answers. Thank you very much.
Thanks very much for that Vince.

Additional questions.
(1) Is it safe for the car to make this modification?
(2) I assume its a straight swop – how long would it take?
(3) The process is reversible, correct?

1. The pre 09/1999 models have a A4S 310R transmissions. The "4" in A4S refers to 4 forward gears. Post 09/1999 models have A5S 360R transmissions, ie 5 forward gears. This is also the same transmission installed on several other BMW models. The transmission gear ratios have changed hence the drop from 4.10 to 3.46.

2. Downside is subjective. 1st gear will be shorter nad most likely rendered useless. Top speed will be reduced as well. And in some of the gears, while cruising, you may rev a little higher.

3. Dinan transmission or engine s/w or both? The car will still shift as needed.

Is the SMG transmission on a BMW M3 2001-2006 models have a good reputation or bad?

by admin on November 28, 2009

Just wandering if the SMG transmission on a BMW M3 is good.
And if it could reach 170k miles easy without any major service.
The reason I was interested in it because it has a automatic option in which my mom could drive in case of emergency.
Some people say that the regular manual transmission is better?

Frankly, the jury is still out on SMG’s. But so far so good…
Remember that they are manual transmissions basically with
automated shifting, and that they had only been in widespread use for approximately 8 years. It has now progressed from SMG I
to II to III ( the latest).
To say that it is not durable is baloney. Same thing with being rough
in normal city use and being fit only for the track. Rumor mongering from people who have never had much or any experience with SMG’s. Or who do not know how to use an SMG.
Normally, the defects would be the same as any manual transmission.
Ocassionally (but rarely) you would see the hydraulic pump or the gear shift sensor taking a dive. More often (but still rare) is oil leaking
from the SMG shifter mechanism (not the tranny). Theoretically, the SMG module could quit but I have yet to see one do it.
But to guarantee that it would last 170K miles is asking too much. Even BMW would not go as far as that. What car manufacturer would
guarantee their transmissions up to 170K ?
EDIT:
To compare the automatic transmission of a 335 or any car for that matter to an SMG simply misses the point. Any automatic transmission can never perform better than a manual or a manual with SMG in the hands of a good driver.
SMG is not meant for boys. Ladies maybe.

i have a 1982 bmw 320i and am wondering how much i could sell the car for?

by admin on November 15, 2009

i am the third owner, all owners non smokers, i have all the maintenance records from all the owners, and everything was profesionally done. the odometer reads 87xxx but there is around 100 000 the interior is in great condition minus a small tear in the shifter leather , but the outside has rust over the wheel well, and by the taillights , and a small blister the size of a dime on the hood
all of the following were replaced:
new water pump
new clutch
all new dashboard lights, and a new hazard button and switch
new fog lights, new front struts and springs
new electrical wiring
new flywheel
new oil filter
new tie rod
i think thats it

non smoker
i tried kbb but it doesn’t go back far enough in years, and i cant find any used bmw models like this for sale

i want to sell , but want to know if i can get close to 2000

thank you
also it is a four cylinder 5 speed manual and it drives great, oil changes have been regualr, and there are new brakes

It’s a 26 year old vehicle, so there is no ’set’ price on it. So it depends on what YOU think it’s worth. Apparently that is $2,000. Set that price on it, if the consumer public agrees it’s worth that, you will get your asking price. If no one seems interested, you can always drop it slightly and try again.
