Anybody ever use their Streptronic transmission in their BMW?

I just purchased an ‘04 BMW X5 with Steptronic. I am a former manual transmission driver but have found the "shifting" of the steptronic rather odd. I keep wanting to reach for the clutch but of course there isn’t one and cannot get the transmission to shift smoothly regardless. How exactly do you do it!? I do think it is neat and I am sure it will be more fuel efficient I am just new to it. Any pointers or tips?

i too went from a manual car into a BMW w/ Steptronic..

i release the gas pedal between shift points… but i mainly use it to down shift… it works great when your on the highway and traffic comes to a rapid stop

overall you’ll just gotta practice w/ it. Its not going to feel like a real manual tranny.. but it not too bad

Knocking noise coming from rear when I put car in reverse. BMW 328 i 1999. Any ideas?

Pending on mileage, it may be the guibo (connects driveshaft to the rearend) which needs to be replaces every so often. Honestly, it could be anything though.

Even though your car is 4 years older, it is still worth more than that Jeep.

Ok to the idiots saying "just buy a car already a manual" , BMW didnt import the 7 series in manual form to the U.S, so he cant just go sell it and buy one . Most the time I would say the same thing ,but in this case it isnt an option . That being said I think this is one of those rare incedents where it IS worth the swap and yes it is possible , after a manual swap and add a better differential and they can run in the 13’s .It will cost a lot , but worth it .

What is a better used car ‘06 BMW M5 or ‘07 Audi RS4?

The prices are about the same right now and there are quite a few of both supercars offered for sale. I love the beastly 507hp M5 Ferrari killer; but the 420hp RS4 is no dog – lighter and Quattro awd is nice for winter in Long Island. I’m torn.

Great problem to have. I love the 06 M5, the wheels on it alone make me drool. Audi is also great. it all comes down to whether you want that snob value or that understated power? I would go with the snob value of the m5.
